UK records 42,408 new Covid cases and 195 deaths

T

he UK recorded 42,408 new Covid cases and 195 deaths on Thursday according to official figures.

It marks a rise on Wednesday’s figure of 35,541 – and a significant climb on the 32,265 infections recorded last week.

Fatalities, meanwhile, have also increased from the 142 reported last Wednesday.

The figures come as thousands of healthcare staff who have not had both Covid jabs were banned from working in care homes, unless they are medically exempt.

Figures published by NHS England show that more than 56,000 current staff in care homes for younger and older residents had not been recorded as having received both doses as of November 7 – four days before today’s deadline.

Meanwhile, leading health experts warned the NHS is “on it’s knees” as a raft of data for England shows the service buckling under pressure.

The King’s Fund health think tank said “chronic workforce shortages” were heaping pressure on overstretched staff who are exhausted from the pandemic while figures showed huge waits for treatment and very long waits for ambulances to reach 999 calls.

The data, from NHS England, shows 5.8 million people were waiting to start treatment at the end of September – the highest number since records began in August 2007.
