Melbourne commemorating Vietnam War a ‘great support to the veterans’

Today is the sixtieth anniversary of the primary troop deployment of Melbourne troopers into Vietnam – marking Australia’s entry right into a fraught and unpopular battle.

Air Force Association Victoria President and Vietnam pilot Max McGregor says the crowds turning as much as the Shrine of Remembrance of their 1000’s are a “great support to the veterans”, lots of whom obtained a chilly welcome again to Australia.

Mr McGregor mentioned the reception of fellow battle veterans was equally frosty.

“The reaction of some was that it wasn’t a real war, because we were doing 12 months service rather than for the duration,” he mentioned.

“That’s gone into the past, now it’s accepted.”
