Many NSW COVID patients admitted for reasons unrelated to the virus

Data revealing NSW COVID hospital patients are being admitted for other reasons is a “critically important statistic that we need to hear almost on a daily basis” from health authorities, says Infectious Diseases Physician Dr Nick Coatsworth.

It comes as new data shows a significant proportion of COVID patients in New South Wales are being admitted to hospital for reasons unrelated to the virus.

That includes bowel obstructions, broken bones, mental health issues and women giving birth.

The data – taken over two days – found 50 per cent of COVID patients were hospitalised for other reasons on day one and almost 40 per cent on day two.

“Because it is it is a calming and reassuring statistic that we shouldn’t hide under a bushel … that sharply changes people’s view of this,” Dr Coatsworth told Sky News Australia.
